Tips To Help Protect Your Home From Burglars During The Holiday Season

Burglaries jump during the holiday season. Burglars are taking advantage of the fact that more homeowners are out shopping, at holiday parties, or out of town with their families, thus not at home. Once in your home, they take items in your home and turn them into the perfect gift for themselves. But this does not mean that you have to sit at home to protect your home against burglars. Here are a few tips that can help you deter burglars from your home during the holiday season.

Ensure the Exterior of Your Home is Well-Lit

One of the ways that you protect your home against a burglar is to ensure the exterior of your home is well-lit. Many people replace their bright white light bulbs with fun and colorful ones during the holiday season. Or they unplug their flood lights to use the outlet for inflatables or holiday lights. Unfortunately, this makes your home dark, which allows a burglar to lurk around your home unnoticed. Keep your home well-lit to keep it protected.

Keep Your Valuables Out of Sight

Another way to keep ensure you don't have a target on your home for burglars is to keep valuables out of sight. It is not uncommon for people to drawback their curtains or blinds to showcase their Christmas tree or a holiday display. But when you do, ensure that you are not showing off what items you have in your home, such as computers and televisions.

Cut Down Electronics Boxes

Speaking electronics, during the holiday season, many people take advantage of Black Friday sales and buy new electronic devices. But after you open these items, be careful what you do with the box. If you leave the box intact and simply throw it out on garbage day, you are advertising to everyone, including burglars, what you just bought. Instead, cut the box down before you dispose of it.

Put Your Lights on a Timer

The last tip to help protect your home from burglars during the holiday season is to put your lights on a timer. If your home is dark, it is easy to tell that no one is home. Putting your home on a timer makes it less obvious that you may be away, which may deter burglars.

An alarm control system is one of the best ways to protect your home against a home burglar. The security system can be used in conjunction with the tips above to help minimize your risk of a burglar breaking into your home and stealing your valuables. If you do not currently have a home security system, investing in one can give the gift of security and peace of mind this holiday season.
